Book Notes: Attached
Sep 20, 2022Book review on: Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find - and Keep - Love by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller
Let me start with this: I LOVE ATTACHMENT THEORY. Understanding your history of attachment explains a lot. Afterall, we are social creatures, which means we are made to live with other humans.
This book is great for many reasons, but mostly because it is easily digestible and has concrete actions you can take now to shift relationships. Also, if you can see beyond how these concepts relate to romantic relationships, this book will have immeasurable value because you will see the world differently…too much? I think not. Understanding attachment theory really helps you see how people have developed particular relational patterns, whether it's as a friend, parent, co-worker, boss, leader, etc.
What this book beautifully points out is how our attachment style plastic (changes over time) I’d like to add, it can also vary depending on the domain (work, romantic partnership, parent/child).
In short, the reason why attachment is important is because once we have a secure attachment (regardless of the area of life) then it creates the sense of safety needed to go out and explore the world. We are more confident, independent and daring once the “secure base of support” has been established.
